Linda,

Confession on Pulp Fiction... I saw it in the theater but exited during the gimp scene. I've still yet to return to the film. I know it's pretty damn good.

For the Bests I'll throw in:
Jaws
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Halloween (The Original)
Magnolia
Memento
Children of Men
Fight Club
Rob Roy
The Usual Suspects
. . . i know there's more here but that's all i can think of at present

Among the Worsts:
Hidalgo
Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Manos: The Hands of Fate - This is truly so "classic" a terrible film, one really needs to see it for the unintentional comedy - especially the MST3K version of it.
Ace Ventura II: When Nature Calls (This is really too bad cause the first one was terrifically funny)
In the Army Now - Saw it at the dollar theater and wanted my dollar back

I've been seeing lots of good documentaries lately (I know - Mr. Dullsville!):

This So-Called Disaster
Documents the rehearsal process for Sam Shephard's "The Late Henry Moss" in San Francisco. Great watching Nick Nolte, Woody Harrelson, Sean Penn, Cheech Marin and others go through the process of bonding as a cast.

Sicko
Along with Farenheit 911, some pretty intense stuff from Mr. Moore. He does go over the top often, but what an important voice to have out there.

Why We Fight
Distills the American fascination with war and brings Eisenhower's concept of the military-industrial complex into the Iraq era. Scary.

Spellbound
Saw this with the kids and we all loved it. I've yet to see Wordplay, but it's probably next up.

Murderball
Great one about wheelchair... rugby? "Murderball" is actually the best word to describe it. Raunchy and uplifting at the same time.

Who Killed the Electric Car
Another eye-opener about how the "free market" in the US often doesn't really deliver what the market wants. Corporate greed and manipulation at its best/worst.

The Lords of Dogtown
Not really documentary, but based on the history of modern skateboarding and the rise of 70s stars from out of the LA scene.

Then there's the fiction:
Good Night and Good Luck
Jarhead
House of Flying Daggers
City of God
Billy Elliot
Flags of Our Fathers
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
Thumbsucker
Capote
Babel
Crash
Delicatessen
The Last King of Scotland

Yoiks! Long post - sorry... Too many to list!

Bad:
Half the movies we've rented or gone with the kids to see...

Also: Borat (would have walked out if we weren't watching at home), Departed (saw it three times hoping I'd like it - never did), Idiocracy (couldn't get past its juvenality).

Stop me! It's too late to do this!

Nice picks on the documentary's there cave dog. Why We Fight, Spellbound, and Who Killed the Electric Car were all great! I would also recommend The Fog of War to anyone who enjoyed Why We Fight. Spectacular film looking at the political scene of the 60's as it is recounted by Robert McNamara (Kennedy's Secretary of Defense).

James and Chris

Heaven Come Down-(i think) is a
great documentary of pentacostal worshipers in West Virginia.

The Ruttles- to funny

I also just saw Twim Peaks -the movie-not sure if I like it or not -I had really bad dreams when I saw it.

Wow Linda, this was surprisingly a very hard post to comment on. I think it's because there is soo many movies that I love and also many I hated. Which makes it hard to list, because my comment would go forever. But I guess I'll list a few.

I just resaw My Left Foot and Daniel Day Lewis just amazes me. I love all his movies that he's been in.

Garden State

Lover's of the Artic Circle...I've been starting to like more and more indie and independant films. They stories they present sometimes are so rich.

Les Choristes (The Choir). I love this movie. It's marvelous how the movie blends together the drama, the music, and the inspiration of how a group of boys and one man can rise above everything to make a difference, even if it was for a short period of time.

The Others. The story makes you wonder and think and made me scared after it ended.

The Godfather I and II. Just a powerful performance by a wide range of actors with a powerful storyline to go with it.

Alpha Dog. At the beginning I was thinking it was a movie for young adults just watching a movie about stoners, drunking, and partying. But by the end, I was totally blown away of how deep the story became.

Ok, here are some movies I didn't like.

The Village. This was just a complete disappiontment. M. Night Shyamalan was reaching with this plot. Signs was his last real good one, but that is sometimes argued.

In the Army now. Pauly Shore, I just don't care for. Unfortunately his movies are always on when nothing else is on.

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. For the amount of high expectations and the build up for this on and only episode, it was an utter failure. Especially the introduction of Darth Vader. This moment was the the purpose of the the prequels in my opinion.

There's many other movies that I like and hate but again, my comment would go forever. This is a list I can just think off the top of my head while running around at work. I'll get back if I think anymore. :-)

Spikes Lee's When the Levees Broke- its what made me go to New Orleans and do what I could to rebuild. Its really an amazing documentary and I will loan it out to whoever would like to see.

When I went to Nawlins I had to remind myself I was still in the US- it felt like I was in third world country. It was the most moving, heartbreaking thing I have ever gone thru.

Good movies:
How has no one mentioned The Shawshank Redemption? That is like one of my all time favorite movies. It gets me every single time.

Field of Dreams - I fucking love baseball. It's the best god damn baseball movie EVER MADE! And the ending..oh man. I cry. I'm a sucker.

Are we allowed to swear in this blog? :(

Sneakers. All time favorite. While watching them do their 'hacking' now is kind of painful, it's witty, fast paced and awesome.

I laughed my ass off at Borat. I can see how it's not for everyone but I thought it was hilarious.

Finding Nemo. Hate Disney all you want but this movie is pure gold.

Speaking of Disney: The Emperor's New Groove is perhaps one of the most underrated Disney movies of all time. It's god damn hilarious!

The Count of Monte Cristo--the remake with Jesus and the guy from Momento. I LOVE that movie. It's funny, and touching, and very very witty. Plus awesome costumes.

I'll second Raiders and throw in Last Crusade. <3

Wedding Crashers: hilarious!

Any movie which features anacondas. Anacondas are fucking awesome. Especially when they're eating Owen Wilson.

Bad movies:

I just didn't like Fight Club. I get that maybe it's just a guy movie. But I just found it to be totally and completely boring.

The Others. Oh man. Worst movie ever. I wish she'd shot herself in the head in the beginning of the movie. And if you didn't realize they were ghosts, you deserve to be spoiled. Btw, Jesus dies at the end of the Passion. OMG!

I'm sure there are more. I'll think of them later!

Oh, Star Wars Episode 1. Someone actually set the theater I saw it in on fire THANK GOD so I've never seen the second half of it. I hear this is when it started to 'get good'. I think that's a god damn LIE!

james said...

hahahahahahahahahhahahahha....

Erin, you kill me....still laughing out loud at your comments.... :)

Linda said...

Mouse- Nemo Rocks-

That turtle is my hero-

Jason said...

Erin...you are too much!!! But how could I forget Shawshank Redemption?? I Love that movie!! I love Finding Nemo too. Rock On!! But what about The Incredibles? I'd have to put that up with Finding Nemo.

Mouse said...

Oh god the Mummy movies. My bias here is that as an archaeologist I know that it's more than a little off base and they just go right on, making tons of crap up. As someone who is not a complete moron, I know that THEY DID NOT HAVE SAI IN ANCIENT EGYPT. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD COULD SOMEONE CHECK THEIR FACTS?

Man. Watching that second movie nearly killed me. It was like the moment in Teaching Miss Tingle where they talk about all the witches that were burned in New England. SOMEONE, SERIOUSLY, IT'S SEVENTH GRADE HISTORY CLASS WE'RE TALKING HERE.

And yet those writers are making millions of dollars, and I am blogging.

wtsd?

Okay, I'm going to just mention two movies on my mind at the moment:

1. The documentary "Fuck" . . . sooo interesting, all about that word and profanity in general. Makes you laugh, makes you think.
2. Because it's Christmas time coming up, "Love Actually." A romantic comedy that doesn't take itself seriously. I'm not a big Hugh Grant fan, so initially I thought, "Oh no . . . Hugh Grant as the prime minister of England!?" But it's not that exactly. It's Hugh Grant as Hugh Grant as the Prime Minister of England. As though someone charmingly befuddled could get elected to the country's highest office. Well, the US at least got the befuddled part down.

did anyone see the documentary about the founder PETA on HBO? I watched it late last night and was really intrigued. I might become a vegatarian again.

but I do love me some good ole bbq chicken

Linda said...

ok so here is my question- do you think that PETA's actions help or hurt the animal rights movement. They do some very out there stunts and just wanted to know what you guys thought

james said...

I think PETA contributes to both. I'm grateful for the awareness that they raise but i fear they tend to be a little one-sided from time to time. Plus, getting Pamela Anderson to advocate for animal rights by ranting against the use of artificial produced hormone-induced chicken breasts probably won't get anyone to take them seriously.

KFC bowls are delicious!

Hey Linda,

I believe that's Duran Duran's The Reflex.

About PETA, I really do admire the awareness the Organization was meant for, but they're recent "one-sidedness" (as said by James, thanks) has put a bad taste to their name. It needs to go back to their roots of speading awareness without being fanatical.

Linda said...

Jason you rock!!!yes its Duran Duran!!!!

you win a front row seat to Crucible on Ice!

Wow, this is fun! So many great suggestions. I'm updating my Netflix queue as I read everyone's picks.
Best: I agree with a lot of what folks have said already. Here are a few more that I like a lot, in no particular order. I'm sure I'll think of more as soon as I submit this.

Chinatown: 'Nuf said.

The Pianist: (an amazing film. Polanski rocks)

Sneakers: I'll add a thumbs up. Fun and charming.

Dracula: (the Werner Herzog version with Klaus Kinsky)

Dracula (the version with Frank Langella and Olivier. Watch Kate Nelligan!)

Lawrence of Arabia: Stunning and complex, like me. DOH!)

Frenzie (an oft overlooked Hitchcock. Sick, sick, sick.)

Night of the Living Dead

Day of the Jackel (Orig. with Edward Fox)

Howard the Duck: (Just kidding. Wanted to see if you were paying attention)

My Favorite Year: Peter O'Toole rocks.

Doctor Strangelove: Brilliant. Too bad we didn't get to see George C. Scott in more comedies.

Michael Clayton: I just saw it. Clooney, Wilkinson, Pollack and Swinton were all great.

Willy Wanka (the original). I had nightmares about UmpaLumpas for years.

Gattaca: Haunting. Lovely sound track. I saw this while alone in San Diego. It was one of those moments when my mood and the film dovetailed perfectly.

Worst:
Face Off: Absolutely, without question, the worst film I've ever seen. In comparison, everything else seems not so bad. Although I will say that George Lucas deserves to be flogged. I have no idea why he thought it was a good idea to show the world that under the great suit, Darth Vader is just a skinny Canadian kid with nice hair.
Anyway, that's all for now. You guys are great. jt

Looking for Richard- with Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin, so many other actors I recognize. Im watching it right now and its so great.

Linda said...

Ok I realize I now have been blogging to myself (this is what happens when you dont get out much)so I will continue because it beats talking about why putting playdough in someones hair is not a good idea.

I really have to say how impressed i was with Alec Baldwin in "Looking for Richard" I always knew he was an amazing actor but to see him to Shakespeare was amazing. Kevin Spacey as usual was brilliant but he is so brilliant in this it was an education just to watch him. I wasnt thrilled with Pacino's choice of Lady Anne(Winnoa "Abigail Williams" Ryder") but I guess he was going for the young, it girl of the time.

I admire anyone who can do Shakespeare(it scares me) so to see this was so great.

ok back to the land of sharing is caring- maybe I'll teach my preschool students"Now is the winter of our discontent"
